My daughter absolutely loves the kids’ classes at SJJA Crows Nest, and I can see why! The supportive environment builds her confidence and strength while keeping it fun. As a blue belt myself, I’m blown away by the top-tier coaching from Bruno Alves, a multiple-time world champion, whose expertise sets a high standard that flows through the entire team. Special shout-out to Rob Hill and Simon Chandra for their exceptional instruction and ego-free approach. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, SJJA is fantastic for building physical and mental resilience that carries into everyday life. Highly recommend!

This gym is truly one of my happy places. I started training with the team even before SJJA was officially established (before Sydney not even Sharp!). Over the years, I've moved around — different cities, gyms, states, and even countries — and leaving was always tough. But every time, I've come back. Most recently, I returned to St Leonards after over five years away, and the way I was welcomed back — like no time had passed — was something special. The positive impact this gym has on my body, mind, and soul is undeniable. You guys make this place what it is, and you know who your are. Great people, great mats, great Jiu-Jitsu, and top-quality merch! Be proud, be SHARP! 100% recommended for all ages and diff levels of jiu-jitsu.

Tried the beginner BJJ class here with a friend who trains at the gym—had an awesome time. Simon was super friendly, patient, and made everything easy to follow. The vibe was welcoming from the moment I walked in. Great rolling partners, no egos, just good energy all around. Highly recommend for anyone curious about starting BJJ!

Although we’re not members at SJJA Crows Nest and live quite far away, my daughter never wants to miss their kids camps. The camps blend jiu-jitsu, games, and team-building activities in such a fun, energetic environment. Coach Nate, Nelson, and Jayden are incredibly caring and attentive. My daughter would happily skip any other plans just to attend. We absolutely love the camp and the positive vibe they create!

SJJA Crows Nest is not only a great place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it's also a family-like ambiance where professors and training partners share the enjoyment of being together and around a common passion. Whether doing it for your physical activity or for your kid to gain confidence and spend some energy, SJJA will provide a safe and fun environment. BJJ changed my life in many ways and doing so surrounded by all of these great people is simply priceless.

The best BJJ gym/school in Sydney. Great instructors. Great environment. All the practitioners are friendly and easy going. They have a good mix of competitor and casual BJJ practitioners. Everyone is friendly and it's one of the top BJJ gym for children as well. They give you free trial class (with Gi provided for free) so you can see for yourself before joining. You can also come around and watch a few classes. They have Fundamentals program for beginners, advanced program for people who have been doing BJJ for 6 months or more and they also have No-gi program for someone who wants to train no-gi. They have morning, afternoon and evening classes. They have once a week women's class too. So there is a class for everyone here. It's conveniently located less than 50 meters from the new Crows Nest Metro station south exit, 100 meters from the Pacific Highway bus stops and 5 mins walk from St. Leonard train station. There are quite a few car parks around here with 2 hours free parking as well.

I joined SJJA in July 2020, just after lockdown, having hear how good BJJ was I needed to try it for myself. The school was very welcoming, from the instructors to the the students. The beginners classes are great, your often match with an appropriate partner which is amazing. The classes flow, building on lesions taught from the previous week, meaning even if you get to 1-2 session in a week you will have a good foundation of what BJJ is. The school is very clean and I feel there is a lot of value for the money. On avg I attend 3-4 times per week and could not be happier. Class timetable is great allowing for full time workers and even early rises. I would recommend to anyone, children, women and men. The teachers are very helpful and take the time to assist you after class

Also, so impressed by the way the kids classes are run and facilitated in a fun and engaging way. Amazing facility, highly recommend.

I took my very small-for-his-age 5 year old son to SJJA Crows Nest and was blown away how well he was treated by the Black Belt Instructor and Owner, Professor Bruno Alves. He was kind, supportive, nurturing, and provided excellent clear age-appropriate instruction in a safe and fun way. I was so impressed I wanted some of that for myself so I signed up for adult classes the following day! My son is now 15, still not big for his age but has the serene confidence of someone who knows how to handle himself which keeps him relaxed and humble with nothing to prove to 'alpha males'. I'm now a 57 year old brown belt staying super healthy and have recommended SJJA to many friends and colleagues who have been delighted to sign their children up to something healthful and positive. Culture in an organisation is EVERYTHING. The care and respect Bruno brought to the mats is reflected in all the professors, coaches and students. The Academy is the most hygienic and safe I've encountered in many years of martial arts training. If you're wondering whether to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or martial arts in general for you or your family, this is the right place to start.

Couldn't recommend enough. I have been attending Simon's evening classes for the past six weeks and it has been a great experience. SJJA Crowes Nest was a great experience for me. I was interested in picking up a martial art but wasn’t sure what would be the right fit for me. The respect and discipline of the class mates and teacher had me engaged in every class I joined. SJJA Crows Nest is a great place for my kids to learn a great self-defence skill and increase their confidence. This is the only activity during the week that my daughters are super excited about and don't want to miss. The professors are awesome. They manage pretty big turnout of students in each class very effectively and give attention to everyone in the class. I have personally learned martial arts Karate and Jiu Jitsu for almost 10 years. I highly recommend SJJA Crows Nest and if I ever go back to training with 3 young kids I will join them blind folded.

I have been a member for many years (starting when aged 58 and SJJA under its founder Bruno Alves was very much smaller) and look forward to continuing. SJJA Crows Nest is no doubt excellent for anyone aspiring to be a BJJ champion (with very talented coaches available for morning, lunch or evening sessions producing many champions). But importantly, it is also a welcoming and respectful environment for those, like me, past their physical prime and not aspiring to be world champions but to develop in fitness and challenge themselves in a supportive environment. Warmly recommended.

When I was looking for a gym, I was lucky enough to find SJJA Crows Nest. The moment I walked in, I was immediately greeted by the staff and professor to help me start my trial (I was intimidated at first since it was my first time joining a martial arts gym). They really adapted their class well and took time to help beginners (like me) learn the movements necessary in BJJ. I was immediately sold on this gym from my first class because the professors had incredible personalities, the students were all great, and the beginner classes were engaging. The gym itself is a huge space. Big mat spaces on 2 floors. Whenever I've gone to class, the mats always seemed to be in great conditions. I also tend to come during the later classes, 7:30pm. I was genuinely surprised that this gym had a good amount of people that attend the late class. It was really tough for me to find a BJJ gym that offered classes after 6:30pm. Fast forward several months later (started around June 2023), after taking some time to invest in BJJ, it really started becoming a rewarding experience. The combined expertise of professors Almiro, Sergio, Marco, and Rob enriches this gym with a vast reservoir of knowledge. You can really walk up to them and ask them about any scenario and they'll give you a great solution, and may even give you a drill to work on for it. They've also done an incredible job progressing my BJJ skills and making sure I do not stay stagnant. As a result of going for several months, I feel much stronger and more confident about defending myself.

SJJA Crows Nest is the perfect place to train jiu jitsu! Especially for women who want to start, but might feel a bit intimidated, SJJA Crows Nest is one of few gyms that offer a dedicated women’s class, led by an impressive female professor, and there is a great community of like-minded women here who are friendly and support you at every turn. Professors Almiro, Rob, Sergio and Daini are amazing instructors, because not only do they “walk the walk” and lead by example, but you can see their dedication, effort, skill and passion for teaching jiu jitsu in every session, they care about your progress, and it inspires me to keep pushing and improving every time. Training is fun, challenging and rewarding so thank you!! 🙂 Overall there is a great mix of different classes morning, noon and night and a supportive and safe training environment. Highlights of a training week for me would include the women’s class (Professor Daini), morning class (Professor Rob), lunchtime class (Professor Almiro), no-gi (Professor Sergio), finishing the week with wrestling class (Professor Rob).

If you're looking for a place where you can tie yourself into a human pretzel and call it fun, then SJJA Crows Nest is your go-to dojo! Imagine my surprise when I rocked up as a beginner white belt 12 months ago, only to find out that I'd be embarking on a non-stop laugh (or object of laugh) and challenge riot with a side of Jiu-Jitsu. The journey's been a blast under the watchful eyes of our BJJ wizards (you might know them as 'professors'). Speaking of professors, shoutout to Professor Almiro! This guy will teach you how to be patient and believe in yourself without extorting yourself to use strength and force all the time. But wait, there's more! SJJA isn't just a playground for us grown-ups. It's also a kiddie paradise. Our 6-year-old just had a week-long summer camp with Professor Marco. Spoiler alert: she loved it and is now all geared up to join the kids' beginners class. So, come on down to SJJA, where the only thing tighter than the chokes are the friendships 🙂 Oss!

From the first visit, the welcoming and friendly community atmosphere is palpable, making it an ideal place for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. The instructors at SJJA are of the highest caliber, offering a wealth of knowledge in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Their passion is evident in every class, and they excel in tailoring their teaching to suit all levels, ensuring everyone progresses and enjoys their journey in the martial art. This approach makes SJJA more than just a gym; it’s a community hub where everyone is encouraged and motivated. I highly recommend SJJA to anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, whether you’re starting out or looking to further your skills. My two children (both aged under 10) and myself have all trained at SJJA Crows Nest for the last 1-2 years. I regularly recommend this Academy to anyone interested in Jiu Jitsu for either themselves or their children. The culture of this gym is a fantastic fit for our family - warm and welcoming while maintaining high expectations and constant challenges for all members. As someone with no martial arts background I have never felt threatened or ostracised - I've been thoroughly impressed with the sense of camaraderie and that all members, be they hobbyists or elite competitors are welcomed and celebrated for their achievements.

SJJA goes beyond being a jiu-jitsu academy; it’s a tight-knit family. My daughter and I have been enjoying it from day 1! The staff are so friendly and the trainers demonstrate professionalism. They explain all techniques in detail. I would highly recommend SJJA to anyone who wants to learn or advance in jiu-jitsu.

Training at SJJA crows nest has been one of my life’s highlights for the past two years. My BJJ journey has been guided by some of the best coaches and since day 1, I came into such a loving and supportive community. I am deeply grateful and honoured to be a member of the SJJA HQ. There’s a range of classes to pick from, whether it’s women’s morning classes on Sundays, wrestling classes on Friday evenings or No gi trainings on Wednesdays, there’s plenty of choice for the whole family. Both off and on the mat spaces are always clean and tidy, including a number of showers and restrooms. All of the coaches are well experienced and respectful and the staff members are friendly and easy going. Overall, SJJA has become my second big family and everyday, I look forward to my time on the mats.

I’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu for the past three years across different academies due to moving houses. After recently relocating to the area, I discovered SJJA Crows Nest and decided to check it out. It’s been over a month now, and I must say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience. The lunch classes with Professor Almiro have been a highlight for me. His expertise in BJJ is evident, and yet he maintains a friendly and approachable demeanor. Additionally, attending morning classes with Professor Rob has been motivating, pushing us hard at 6 am while keeping the energy levels high for the rest of the day. It’s clear that SJJA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all students, whether they have competitive goals or train for recreation and stress relief. The exceptional level of expertise across the board makes SJJA a balanced academy. I would highly recommend SJJA to anyone interested in training BJJ, as it provides a friendly, competitive, and respectful environment where you can balance life and training effectively. OSS! 🥋

2 weeks ago I decided to step out of my comfort zone and do something I had always wanted to do... I started my Journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When choosing a school I felt like there was a lot to consider due to my experience in different martial arts and disciplines over the years. I chose SJJA because of the calibre of the coaches and their accomplishments. After only a short period of time I can say I made the right choice. Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at SJJA has exceeded any expectations I had. It is an amazing place to train, learn this art and sport. SJJA provides a welcoming environment that is friendly, safe, clean and fun. Every person I have dealt with is professional and caring and instills a sense of family. Im glad I made the choice to start at SJJA and can’t wait for my next training session! OSS!

I love SJJA Crows Nest. The community is inclusive and welcoming, the leadership inspiring and kind, and the culture perfect. Hygienic, safe, challenging, and high quality - that's everything you need in a martial arts academy. It's been great for me (43 yo man) and my 14 yo son. It's pushing us both and given us so much in a short time.
